Behavioral health data tells us that people who have a serious and persistent mental health diagnosis have a life expectancy that is 25 years shorter than the general population, often due to serious health concerns that may not be effectively managed in traditional medical health care systems.
Our VOA Hope Center – DC provides Whole Person Behavioral Health Services such as traditional clinic based services for mental health, rehabilitation services, health home services, employment assistance, peer support services and substance use disorder treatment.

Respite Care
This is an innovative 16-bed program that offers medical respite, temporary housing, behavioral health and social support services for homeless adults with a chronic illness, mental illness, substance use disorder or co-occurring condition. Learn More about this program HERE.
Day Rehabilitation Services
Day Rehabilitation Services provide clients with structured rehabilitation in group and individual settings. The program also features medication management assistance, therapy, counseling, and classes on effective communication, relationships, coping, and anger management. Each class and session are designed to assist our clients ability to function independently in the community. In addition to classes the Day Rehabilitation Services features two 3-hour sessions 5 days per week and also includes nutrition education, outings, and community activities to promote a health life balance.
Mental Health Rehabilitation Services (MHRS)
MHRS services are delivered 50% of the time in the community, including in the consumer’s home. Services are for people who have a primary mental health diagnosis of a serious and persistent mental illness, and who need help to return to a level of functioning that allows them to fully integrate their lives at home, at work, and in the community.
Services are delivered by para professional community support workers, independently licensed, master’s level mental health professionals, and peer support counselors. Services are person centered, selected by the consumer, and reflected in a treatment plan designed to help consumers reach their highest levels of independence and recovery from a major mental illness.
Free Standing Mental health Services
Free Standing Mental Health Clinic offers “Traditional Clinic Based Services” for mental health. These services include an initial assessment of service need that is approved by a psychiatrist. Treatment planning is minimal and most service delivery consists of traditional psychotherapy, medication management, some case management and case coordination. Services are for people who have a well-managed mental health condition or for people who are not yet interested in more intensive services, but would like to see a psychiatrist or a therapist for help.
Outpatient Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
We offer outpatient, American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Level 1 services for clients with a substance use disorder treatment need.
Clients receive one (1) to eight (8) hours of services per week based on their medically assessed need, and in accordance with their individualized and specific treatment plan. Outpatient treatment duration varies, but generally lasts up to one hundred and eighty (180) days. Treatment and supports can continue long-term when the treatment plan indicates it is needed for clients who need long-term disease management.
Medication-Assisted Treatment
Our MAT program will target specific subsets of the Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) population including the chronically homeless, mentally ill, and veterans. The program is part of a federal initiative through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
The MAT program will be prescribing SUBOXONE® (buprenorphine and naloxone) in combination with a comprehensive set of OUD-related whole-person care services to eligible program participants.
These services include enrollment in Peer Pathways and connection with our SUD services. Our Peer Pathways program provides psychoeducation services and case management like services.
Peer Pathways
This program is led by certified peer support specialists with lived experience with mental illness and opioid or stimulant use. They provide support to low-income adults and youth interested in pursuing treatment, prevention and recovery.
‘Yo Creo En Mi’ Program
Yo Creo EnMi (“Faith in Me”) is an outpatient behavioral health program that offers specialized services to Hispanic/Latino adults living with mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders who are underinsured or lack health insurance.
